the problem

Imagine a world where forests are silent. Millions of songbirds are caught and caged across Indonesia annually and every year the forests lose some of their song and magic. Birds are the first signs of healthy and balanced forests and are responsible for seed distribution and insect control.

Indonesia is at risk of losing its incredible bird diversity as more and more birds are captured to meet the huge domestic and international demand for birds, which are kept in cages in many Indonesian households. Songbirds in particular are sought-after for use in highly popular songbird competitions.

Bird poaching is cruel and torturous for the individual birds, many of which die from stress during the journey from capture to market.

But it is also an unsustainable source of livelihood for the bird hunters as bird populations are fast diminishing from the wild. One bird catcher from Bali tells us “In 2015 my team and I used to catch 500 birds every two days, now in 2022 we can only catch 50 birds every couple of days. I’m worried the birds will run out.”

the opportunity

The fate of Indonesia’s bird populations, including many endemics, is still uncertain. However, there is hope as younger generations are paying more attention to environmental issues and Indonesia is beginning to embrace the concept of a “green” culture and the importance of protecting its natural resources.

We see an opportunity to leverage upon this trend and begin driving a nationwide campaign to shine a light on this issue with the aim to reduce the demand for bird-keeping across Indonesia. We are currently raising funds to undertake the following activities:
